Gewerkschaft Neumühl was a coal mining cooperative in Hamborn — today part of Duisburg — operating in the heart of the Ruhr district during the hyperinflation emergency of 1923. Like dozens of industrial firms across the region, it issued its own notgeld to pay workers when the Reichsbank could not supply enough physical currency to meet weekly wage demands. The 500,000 Mark denomination places this squarely in the middle phase of the inflation spiral, before the truly astronomical figures of late 1923.
The watermarked paper is a relatively uncommon feature for industrial notgeld of this type, suggesting the firm sourced security stock rather than plain commercial paper.
