| Reverse description | Plain cream paper printed in dark brown letterpress, with the issuer's abbreviated name ':: Bergbau-Akt.-Ges. Lothringen ::' in a ruled header at the top. Two crossed-hammer mining symbols flank the word 'Gutschein', below which the denomination 'Fünfhunderttausend Mark' is set in large bold Gothic type. Two paragraphs of Gothic text advise the bearer that the note has monetary value and must be treated as cash, and that the holder bears responsibility for any loss; a further clause states that after expiry of the stated redemption period the note loses its validity and will not be redeemed. The issuer name 'Bergbau-Akt.-Ges. Lothringen.' appears in a display script at the foot. |

Bergbau-AG Lothringen was a colliery company based in Gerthe, near Bochum, and like hundreds of Ruhr industrial firms in 1923 it was forced into issuing its own emergency currency — Notgeld — to pay its workforce when Reichsbank notes simply could not be printed fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. This note, at 500,000 Mark, would have represented serious purchasing power for perhaps a matter of days before the exchange rate moved again.
Company-issued mining Notgeld from the Ruhr is a distinct subcategory; much of it was printed in-house or by local printers with limited means, and survival rates vary sharply depending on whether workers spent the notes immediately or held them as worthless paper within weeks.
