Eisfeld is a small town in the Thüringer Wald — the kind of place that would never have issued its own currency under ordinary circumstances. But the hyperinflation of 1923 forced thousands of German municipalities, savings banks, and private firms to print emergency money (Notgeld) simply to meet payroll and conduct daily commerce, as the Reichsbank could not produce official notes fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time this 500,000 Mark note was issued, that denomination was worth less each week it sat unspent.
Ferd. Dietsch was a local Eisfeld printer — a detail worth noting because it means design quality was entirely dependent on a small regional shop's capabilities, not a specialist security printer.
