Comments

Marienberg is a small mining town in the Erzgebirge, and its district authority — the Amtshauptmannschaft — was among hundreds of German regional bodies forced to print their own emergency currency in 1923 as hyperinflation made Reichsbank supply chronically inadequate. By mid-1923, the time between a denomination's authorization and its obsolescence could be measured in days.

Otto Henning A.G. in Greiz handled a substantial volume of Saxony-region Notgeld commissions during this period, printing for multiple issuing authorities simultaneously. The 500,000 Mark face value, staggering by any earlier standard, was already insufficient for most transactions within weeks of issue.
