Müllheim is a small market town in the Markgräflerland, and its municipal administration — like hundreds of German local authorities — was forced into emergency currency issuance during the hyperinflation of 1923 simply because the Reichsbank could not print and distribute legal tender fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time a 500,000 Mark note left the local printer, its real value was already eroding by the hour.
Locally printed Notgeld at this denomination level was typically produced on short runs with minimal security features, which made counterfeiting almost pointless — the economic conditions did the work instead.
