Hofgeismar was a small market town north of Kassel, and like hundreds of other German municipalities in 1923, it exercised its emergency authority to issue Notgeld when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. By the time notes at this denomination were being struck, the half-million mark figure — which would have seemed astronomical a year earlier — barely covered a tram fare.
Gebr. Gotthelft in Kassel printed for numerous Hessian district authorities during this period, which occasionally creates attribution difficulties when undated printer proofs surface without issuer markings.
