Bad Homburg vor der Höhe was among the hundreds of German municipalities forced to print their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, as the Reichsbank's output simply could not keep pace with the collapsing purchasing power of the mark. C. Naumann in Frankfurt handled enormous volumes of Notgeld work that year for surrounding towns and administrative bodies — speed, not artistry, was the requirement.
The watermarked paper is worth noting: many comparable municipal issues of this period dispensed with security features entirely as denomination values outran the cost of counterfeiting them.
