One of thousands of Notgeld issues flooding German commerce during the hyperinflation of 1923, this 500,000 Mark note was authorized by the city of Düsseldorf under emergency municipal currency powers — a stop-gap as the Reichsbank struggled to print fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time denominations like this reached circulation, they were often worth less than the paper they were printed on within days.

L. Schwann was a Düsseldorf-based printing and publishing house with genuine commercial capacity, which gave the city a local production option rather than competing for overloaded national printers.
