Schweinfurt's municipal administration issued this note during the most acute phase of Germany's hyperinflation — by mid-1923, the Reichsbank could not print fast enough, and thousands of local authorities, businesses, and transport companies issued their own emergency currency (Notgeld) to keep commerce moving at all. A 500,000 Mark denomination, unthinkable two years earlier, was already losing purchasing power within days of issue.

H. Stürtz in Würzburg was a serious academic press, not a jobbing printer — their involvement points to the better-produced end of the Notgeld spectrum, where municipal pride occasionally overrode the purely functional.
