By 2002, Turkish inflation had so thoroughly eroded the lira's purchasing power that 500,000 of them represented a routine small transaction — the cumulative result of decades of double-digit and occasionally triple-digit annual inflation that had begun accelerating in the 1970s. The following year, Turkey redenominated entirely, replacing 1,000,000 old lira with a single New Turkish Lira. This coin effectively had a one-year lifespan before the entire currency class it belonged to was abolished.
The FAO designation ties it to a United Nations food security program, one of dozens of such issues Turkey produced across multiple denominations.
