Brazil's hyperinflationary spiral of the early 1990s forced the Banco Central into a cycle of issuing ever-larger denominations at accelerating speed. The 500,000 Cruzeiro note appeared as inflation was running at several thousand percent annually — the Cruzeiro itself would be replaced by the Cruzeiro Real in August 1993, at a rate of 1,000 to 1, effectively rendering this denomination worth 500 Cruzeiros Reais almost immediately upon issue.
Third edition of the type, printed domestically by Casa da Moeda do Brasil. A watermark is the sole security feature — a reflection of how short the usable lifespan of any note in this series was expected to be.
