Deutsch-Luxemburgische Bergwerks- und Hütten-AG — commonly known as Deutsch-Lux — was one of the great integrated steel and mining combines of the Ruhr, formed in 1901 through Hugo Stinnes's aggressive consolidation of collieries and ironworks. By 1923, hyperinflation had made the Reichsbank effectively incapable of supplying enough currency for industrial payrolls, and large industrial firms were legally permitted to issue their own emergency notes — Notgeld — to pay workers directly.
This 500-million-mark denomination reflects the autumn 1923 collapse, when denominations escalated by orders of magnitude week to week. Notes of this face value had a useful circulation life measured in days.
