The Amtshauptmannschaft Stollberg was a rural administrative district in the Erzgebirge region of Saxony, and like hundreds of similar bodies across Weimar Germany in late 1923, it printed its own emergency currency — Notgeld — because the Reichsbank simply could not supply denominations large enough to function. By the time notes like this were issued, the half-billion Mark face value was barely sufficient for a loaf of bread. The Rats-Druckerei in Glauchau was a municipal press, not a specialist banknote printer, and the production quality reflects that.
The stabilization of the currency under the Rentenmark in November 1923 rendered the entire issue worthless within weeks of printing.
