The Amtshauptmannschaft Dresden-Altstadt was a rural administrative district surrounding — but distinct from — the city of Dresden itself, and this 500-million-Mark note is a product of the extraordinary municipal and district-level Notgeld emissions of late 1923, when the Reichsbank could not print and distribute currency fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. By the time denominations reached nine figures, the notes were effectively losing value between printing and the cashier's window.

Graphische Werke G.m.b.H. was a Dresden commercial printer, not a security printer — a telling detail about how thoroughly the currency system had broken down by that autumn.
