Kreis Daun was a small rural district in the Eifel region of the Rhineland, and its decision to issue half-a-trillion Mark notes in 1923 reflects just how completely the German hyperinflation had outrun the capacity of the Reichsbank to supply usable currency. Local authorities, municipalities, and private firms across Germany printed their own emergency money — Notgeld — because without it, workers simply could not be paid in denominations that corresponded to actual prices.
Carl Schleicher & Schüll in Düren, a paper and printing firm with a long run of commercial work, handled numerous regional Notgeld commissions during this period. At this denomination, the notes were obsolete within days of issue.
