Additional information

Łukasiewicz, the 19th-century pharmacist who pioneered the kerosene lamp and drilled one of the world's first commercial oil wells in Bóbrka in 1854, was a recurring subject of Polish commemorative coinage during the communist period — partly for genuine historical merit, partly because industrial innovators fit neatly into the state's preferred narrative of Polish technical achievement. This 1983 issue was struck under martial law, declared by Jaruzelski in December 1981 and not formally lifted until July 1983, making the production window historically compressed.
