Poland's 1979 commemorative program honoring Mieszko I — the Piast duke who accepted Christianity in 966 AD and effectively founded the Polish state — was produced in gold and copper-nickel for circulation and collector sets. This nickel trial strike exists outside that official release structure, struck to test die alignment, planchet behavior, or metal flow before production approval. Such pieces were rarely preserved through official channels; most survivors came out of the Mennica Państwowa through informal means during the late communist period, which explains both their scarcity and the occasional difficulty in tracing clean provenance.
