Reverse description A facing bust portrait of Bolesław I Chrobry, first King of Poland (reigned 992–1025), depicted wearing an ornate royal crown and a fur-trimmed mantle, with a beard and mustache rendered in fine detail. The effigy occupies the central field in bold relief, conveying a regal and idealized medieval character consistent with the commemorative series. The curved legend 'BOLESŁAW I CHROBRY' arcs along the upper periphery, flanked by dashes, with the regnal dates '992 - 1025' continuing along the lower arc. The word 'PRÓBA' (trial/pattern) appears vertically to the left of the portrait, identifying this as a pattern strike.

Additional information

This nickel trial strike was produced as part of NBP's internal approval process for the 1980 commemorative program honoring Bolesław I, Poland's first crowned king. Trial pieces in this series were struck in alternative metals — nickel here rather than the issued copper-nickel — to allow mint technicians and bank officials to evaluate die quality and relief before committing to full production runs. Survivors reached the market almost exclusively through later deaccessions and collector sales rather than any formal distribution.
