Part of the Chinese Lunar Gold series, which has run continuously since 1981 and now constitutes one of the longest-unbroken commemorative programs of any sovereign mint. The 2021 Ox issue was released as China's economy rebounded sharply from the disruptions of 2020, and demand for small-denomination lunar gold — particularly the colored variants — outpaced availability at authorized dealers within days of release. The coloring is applied via a lacquer process directly onto the struck surface, a technique the People's Bank refined through the 2010s after early issues showed adhesion problems in humid storage conditions.
