Obverse description Central field features an ornate stylized decorative motif in the form of a traditional Chinese ruyi or cloud pattern, rendered in high relief against a textured background. The design is framed by an elaborate border of intertwining dragons rendered in fine detail. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) is inscribed in Chinese characters along the upper periphery.

Reverse description Two goats are depicted in the central field: a large adult ram with prominent curved horns standing in profile to the left, and a smaller kid goat beside it, both rendered in fine naturalistic relief against a plain polished field. The denomination 50元 appears in the lower portion of the field in Chinese characters and numerals. The inscription 癸未年 (Guiwei Year, the cyclical name for the Year of the Goat in the Chinese calendar) is inscribed to the right of the central design.
