Part of the People's Republic of China's ongoing "Taiwan Scenery" gold series, these issues occupied a peculiar political space: Beijing minting coins depicting landscapes it governed only on paper. The 1990 issue appeared as cross-strait tensions remained frozen in the post-Tiananmen diplomatic isolation that had sharply curtailed Western collector interest in PRC commemoratives, making contemporary sales figures lower than the series typically commanded.
