Additional information

China's gold Guanyin series ran through the early 2000s with the People's Bank experimenting aggressively in holographic finishing — a technology Chinese mints had been refining since the late 1990s. The 2003 issue introduced a holographic background field behind the seated figure, a production decision that required laser-etching at the Shenzhen Guobao Mint before the blanks received their final strike. Mintage for this type was capped at 30,000 pieces, tight enough that secondary market premiums over melt have remained persistent.
