Additional information

Issued to mark the handover of Hong Kong from British administration on July 1, 1997 — the conclusion of the 99-year lease on the New Territories negotiated under the Convention of Peking in 1898. The People's Bank of China produced several denominations in gold and silver for this event, this being the half-ounce gold entry in that program. Collector demand at issue was substantial, driven partly by Hong Kong residents themselves acquiring pieces as keepsakes of the transition.

KM#1044 is occasionally confused with companion pieces from the same series. Weight confirms identification where catalog references are ambiguous.
