Reverse description Two giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) are depicted in a naturalistic setting against a bamboo grove background: a smaller panda is shown in a recumbent pose in the left field, while a larger panda is seated facing left in the right field, both rendered with fine frosted detail contrasting against the mirror-polished field. The denomination 50元 appears at the top of the field, while the fineness and weight inscription 1/10oz Au.999 is incused along the lower periphery.

Additional information

China's Panda gold series, launched in 1982, became the first major bullion program to change its design annually — a deliberate policy break from the static imagery used by the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf. The 2010 issue was struck at multiple facilities, with pieces from the Shenzhen Guobao mint distinguishable by an "SZ" privy mark; unmarked examples originate from the Shanghai or Shenyang mints.

That same year, China surpassed South Africa as the world's largest gold producer — a coincidence that adds quiet irony to the date.
