Obverse description Central field features a detailed depiction of the iconic nine-story wooden pagoda structure at the Mogao Caves (Dunhuang), set against a stylized landscape with cliff formations. The inscription 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs across the upper field in Chinese characters. Below the central motif, a secondary inscription reads 中国石窟艺术·敦煌 (Chinese Grotto Art · Dunhuang), with the year of issue 2001 in the lower exergue.

Reverse description The reverse presents a high-relief rendition of celestial musicians (Apsaras) from the Mogao Cave murals, depicted in flowing robes and surrounded by swirling cloud scrollwork in the field. Three figures are shown in graceful poses, playing traditional instruments, rendered in the classical Tang Dynasty artistic style characteristic of Dunhuang fresco iconography. The denomination 50元 appears in the lower left field.
