By 1944, wartime inflation in Free China was accelerating at a pace that made higher-denomination notes a practical necessity rather than a policy choice. The Central Bank of China had relied heavily on De La Rue for security printing throughout the war — shipping finished notes from London via circuitous routes while Japanese forces controlled much of the coast.
Pick 255 is part of a series that was rendered nearly obsolete by inflation almost immediately upon release. Within two years, denominations in the thousands and tens of thousands had become routine.
