Issued to commemorate the ninth BRICS summit held in Xiamen in September 2017, this coin appeared at a moment of particular diplomatic weight — the meeting occurred just weeks after a serious military standoff between China and India at the Doklam plateau, making the summit's cooperative framing somewhat strained in practice. China had hosted the BRICS summit once before, in Sanya in 2011, but the Xiamen issue marked a noticeably more assertive Chinese posture within the bloc.
