The Bank of West Shantung was established in 1940 under the Japanese-backed puppet administration controlling the western Shandong region, one of several regional collaborationist banks set up to displace Nationalist and Communist currency and integrate occupied territories into Japan's wartime economic framework. The 50 Yuan denomination was aggressive for a newly established institution — high-value notes were a deliberate tool for extracting goods and suppressing locally trusted currencies.
Notes from this bank are poorly documented in standard references, and surviving examples in any condition are genuinely uncommon.
