This note was issued to commemorate China's space program milestones, part of a broader shift by the People's Bank toward themed commemorative paper issues alongside the standard renminbi series. Unlike the circulating 50 Yuan notes of the fifth series, this is a collector-oriented release — legal tender, but produced in limited quantities and sold through designated channels at a premium over face value.

The printing was handled domestically by China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation, which has managed all PBC commemorative output since the late 1990s. Technically unremarkable by current Chinese security printing standards, though the paper composition distinguishes it from the polymer notes China has issued in other commemorative runs.
