Obverse description Central field depicts a detailed rendering of Mao Zedong's birthplace, the historic farmhouse at Shaoshan, Hunan Province, presented in fine relief with architectural precision. A small figure stands before the building, adding scale and historical context to the composition. The national name 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) is inscribed in Chinese characters arranged vertically along the left border. The date 1993 appears in the lower exergue beneath the building. The overall design is executed in a clean, engraved style characteristic of Chinese commemorative issues of this period.

Additional information

Issued to mark the centenary of Mao Zedong's birth on December 26, 1893, this coin appeared at a politically delicate moment — the Party had spent the prior decade carefully managing Mao's legacy following Deng Xiaoping's reforms, officially settling on the verdict that he was "70% right, 30% wrong." The commemorative program surrounding the centenary was enormous, spanning coins, medals, and state ceremonies, but the silver five-ounce issues were produced in strictly limited quantities for the collector market rather than circulation.

KM#543 is among several distinct types from the 1993 centenary series, differentiated by reverse subject and mintage allocation.
