The "Yeni" (New) designation was introduced when Turkey redenominated its currency on January 1, 2005, dropping six zeros from the lira to end years of inflation that had pushed banknotes into the millions. The 50 Yeni Kuruş was thus a coin denomination Turkey hadn't meaningfully circulated in decades. By 2009, the "Yeni" prefix was quietly dropped, making this a short four-year transitional type.
