Additional information

The 1953 Vietnamese coinage program was produced in Paris under French supervision as Bảo Đại's Associated State of Vietnam sought the trappings of monetary independence within the French Union — a political arrangement that was already collapsing around it. Dien Bien Phu fell the following year. The essai designation marks this as a trial strike submitted for approval rather than a circulation issue, produced in strictly limited quantities for official examination.

At 3.5 grams in aluminium for a 31mm flan, the weight specification is notably heavy for the metal — suggesting the diameter was carried over from an earlier bronze design and the composition substituted afterward.
