Vanuatu's "Protect our World" series emerged from the early 1990s wave of environmental commemoratives that flooded the collector market — many of questionable relevance to their issuing nations. Vanuatu, at least, had standing: the archipelago's marine ecosystems and biodiversity were already drawing international scientific attention by this period, and the Reserve Bank issued selectively enough that the series didn't saturate.
KM#17 is one of the harder dates to locate among the Vanuatu silver commemoratives of this run.
