Papua New Guinea hosted the APEC Leaders' Summit in November 2018 — the first time the country had done so — and the meeting ended without a communiqué for the first time in the forum's history, after the United States and China could not agree on trade language. This coin was issued to mark that summit. The applied color process on a circulation-denomination planchet makes it a hybrid commemorative, neither fully collectible nor fully spendable in practice.
