Nasriddin Afandi is the Central Asian incarnation of the Hodja Nasreddin figure — the wandering wise fool whose satirical tales circulated across the Islamic world for centuries, skewering the powerful while delighting the poor. Kazakhstan's claim on the character is cultural rather than biographical; no serious historian places his origins in the steppe. The 2015 commemorative series honoring him sits within a broader Kazakhstani program of issuing collector-grade cupro-nickel pieces celebrating regional folklore and historical figures, many of which saw limited circulation outside souvenir channels.
