Issued to mark the inauguration of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, Bangladesh's first underwater tunnel, running beneath the Karnaphuli River near Chattogram. The tunnel project, long in planning, was built with significant Chinese financing and engineering involvement under a government-to-government agreement — an unusual arrangement to commemorate on a circulating denomination rather than a dedicated non-circulating issue.
Printed domestically by the Security Printing Corporation in Gazipur, this is one of relatively few Bangladeshi commemoratives produced entirely in-country rather than contracted abroad. The watermark remains the sole listed security feature, modest for a 2023 issue.
