| Obverse description | Central field depicts a seated female figure rendered in the style of the celebrated Thracian fresco from the Kazanlak Tomb (4th–3rd century BC), shown in profile on a stool. A wreath of twelve five-pointed stars encircles the design along the periphery, referencing European Union symbolism. The legend 'EU' appears to the left and 'БЪЛГАРИЯ' (Bulgaria) to the right, with a stylised rose motif positioned between the two inscriptions at the base of the design. |

Bulgaria struck this coin in anticipation of EU accession, which finally came on January 1, 2007 — two years after this issue. The Bulgarian National Bank released the EU-themed coinage series ahead of membership as a statement of political commitment during the accession negotiations, not as a commemorative after the fact.
KM#282 is part of a short-lived parallel coinage that was superseded once standard post-accession issues were introduced.
