The 2002 Kyrgyz 50 Som belongs to the second series issued after independence, a series notable for being produced by Giesecke & Devrient throughout — an unusual degree of consistency for a small central bank still establishing its institutional footing in the post-Soviet decade. The Som itself was introduced only in 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble at a time when Kyrgyzstan was among the first former Soviet republics to break from the ruble zone, a decision that carried real economic risk given the country's dependence on regional trade.

Pick 20 is not known for major varieties or significant printing anomalies.
