Miguel Grau Seminario, the Peruvian naval commander lionized for his conduct during the War of the Pacific, had been commemorated on Peruvian currency before this issue — but by 1984 the gesture was largely inflationary housekeeping. Peru's economy was deteriorating sharply ahead of the hyperinflationary collapse that would follow under the García administration, and the 50 Soles de Oro denomination, once meaningful, was being eaten alive by price rises that would eventually force a full currency replacement with the Inti in 1985.
