Reverse description A highly detailed portrait of an African elephant rendered in high relief occupies the central field, depicted facing three-quarters left with prominent tusks and large ears spread wide. The background evokes an African savanna landscape, featuring stylized acacia and other indigenous vegetation. Two birds are shown in flight above the elephant. The legend AFRICAN WILDLIFE ELEPHANT curves along the upper periphery, while the inscription 1/2 OZ Ag 999.9 appears in the lower field, all within a beaded border.

Additional information

Somalia's elephant bullion series occupies an unusual niche: the issuing authority is nominal, with the coins designed, produced, and distributed entirely by the Bavarian State Mint in Munich under licensing arrangement. The "Somalia" designation is essentially a legal fiction enabling a modern bullion program to exist outside established national mint frameworks.

The series began in 2004 and updates its design annually, a strategy borrowed directly from the Austrian Philharmonic and Australian programs to drive repeat collector purchases. KM#282 corresponds to the 2018 iteration of that annual release.
