Additional information

This piece was struck as part of Tonga's commemorative program marking the birth of Princess Elizabeth, daughter of Crown Prince Tupou. Tonga's royal family has long used coinage as a direct instrument of dynastic announcement — a tradition dating to the reign of Tāufaʻahau Tupou IV, who presided over an unusually prolific commemorative minting program throughout the 1970s and 1980s, issuing coins for events that most monarchies would mark only with postage stamps.

KM#101 is among the less widely distributed pieces from this run, with circulation largely confined to the domestic market and collector sets exported through the Pacific island numismatic trade channels active in the mid-1980s.
