Irian Jaya — the western half of New Guinea — was administered by the Netherlands as Netherlands New Guinea until 1962, when U.S.-brokered pressure forced a transfer to a UN transitional authority, and then to Indonesia in 1963. These pattern pieces were struck in 1965 ahead of the Act of Free Choice, a deeply contested 1969 process in which Indonesia selected 1,025 representatives to vote unanimously for integration — a procedure widely criticized as a managed outcome rather than genuine self-determination. The coinage never entered circulation.
