Hassanal Bolkiah ascended to the Brunei sultanate in 1967 at age twenty-one following his father's abdication, inheriting control of one of the world's most oil-rich states at the precise moment North Sea and Middle Eastern petroleum revenues were about to reshape global economics. His fiftieth birthday in 1996 fell during the peak years of Brunei's sovereign wealth accumulation, when the Brunei Investment Agency was managing assets estimated in the hundreds of billions.
