The Riau Archipelago coinage of 1962 existed for a single, narrow administrative reason: the Indonesian government established a separate currency zone for the islands to counter the smuggling economy that had made the Singapore dollar the de facto medium of exchange there. These aluminium pieces circulated only within that zone and were demonetized in 1964 when Jakarta abolished the arrangement and reintegrated Riau into the standard rupiah system — a lifespan of roughly two years.
