Obverse description The obverse features the numeral '50' prominently displayed in the centre field, surrounded by the coats of arms of the nine federal provinces of Austria arranged in a circular band at the border. The legend 'REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH' arcs along the upper periphery, while '50 · SCHILLING ·' appears along the lower periphery. The design follows the standard bimetallic format established for the Austrian 50 Schilling series, with the central denomination rendered in the aluminium bronze outer ring framing the copper-nickel centre.

Additional information

Austria's 1999 50-Schilling issue marked the country's entry into the eurozone on January 1st of that year, though Austrians would continue handling Schillings in their pockets for another three years — euro coins didn't physically circulate until 2002. The Schilling itself had survived since 1925, interrupted only by the Anschluss years when Germany absorbed Austrian currency entirely into the Reichsmark.

This was among the last commemorative issues before the Schilling was demonetized on February 28, 2002.
