| Obverse description | The obverse features a boldly rendered effigy of a roaring lion's head in right profile, occupying virtually the entire field, with a dramatically flowing mane rendered in sweeping, stylized relief lines. The open jaws reveal the lion's teeth, and fine incised lines depict the whiskers and chin hair with great detail. The Ge'ez legend 'ኢትዮጵያ' (Ethiopia) is inscribed in a curved arc along the upper rim, while the Ethiopian calendar date '፲፱፻፷፱' (1969 EC, corresponding to 1977 AD) appears in Ge'ez numerals along the lower rim beneath the lion's head. |

| Reverse description | The reverse presents an allegorical solidarity scene depicting five figures in left-to-right procession, representing the pillars of the Derg revolutionary state: a soldier holding a book, a soldier bearing a rifle, a factory worker with a hammer, a farmer with a plough, and a female worker carrying a sickle. The denomination '50' appears in Arabic numerals at the left of the field, accompanied by the Ge'ez legend 'አምሳ፡ሳንቲም' (Fifty Santeem) completing the value inscription. |
