Comments

Banco Nacional Ultramarino issued this note for Portuguese India — a colonial territory that would remain under Lisbon's administration until the Indian Army's military action of December 1961 forcibly ended four and a half centuries of Portuguese presence on the subcontinent. By that point, BNU's Indian issues had long ceased, and outstanding notes became effectively worthless outside the territory almost overnight.

Bradbury Wilkinson's intaglio work on the P#38 series is competent without being remarkable. The 1945 date places production late in wartime, when shipping security between London and Goa would still have been a genuine logistical concern.
