Pakistan's independence jubilee coins of 1997 were issued during one of the country's more turbulent political years — Nawaz Sharif had just returned to the prime ministership after Benazir Bhutto's second government collapsed amid corruption charges, and the commemorative program was partly a deliberate exercise in projecting national stability at a moment when little existed.
