The Cocos (Keeling) Islands used a rupee-denominated currency from 1977 until 1994, when the Australian dollar was formally adopted as sole legal tender — ending a monetary arrangement that had its roots in the plantation economy run by the Clunies-Ross family, who effectively controlled the atoll as a private fiefdom for over a century.
