Seraphim of Sarov, canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1903 in a ceremony personally championed by Nicholas II, became one of the most venerated saints in the Russian spiritual tradition. Belarus issued this piece in 2008 as part of a broader Orthodox saints series, at a moment when religious iconographic coinage was proliferating across former Soviet states with notable speed.
The four inset synthetic crystals are the distinguishing production detail — a decorative technique the Belarusian mint employed aggressively on commemorative gold issues of this period.
